In today’s podcast episode, we’re talking about the wandering mind. Sometimes called “monkey mind,” this state of an active mind can seem difficult. An active mind is something all meditators face at times, especially when new to practice. It can be a major hindrance, preventing us from continuing or even starting.
monkey mind meditation Under normal circumstances our minds are very busy generating a constant stream of thoughts. These thoughts usually reflect our innermost concerns: worries about our health, our finances, our relationships, about what will happen in the future, or having some regrets about some aspect of our past, etc.
The monk mind is calm, centered and focused. The monkey mind seeks happiness in external things—money, fame, beauty and status. The monk mind knows that happiness is something you cultivate inside yourself—it seeks growth, contribution, connection. Venerable Zasep Rinpoche teaches many methods to settle monkey minds, among them Analytical Meditation, Scanning and Mindfulness of Feelings.
