Abstract Background: Studies on breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) are trying to optimize medical and surgical treatments for early and advanced stages of this disease. The aim of this article is to share the experience gathered on the authors' prospectively collected 46 well-documented cases. A team of researchers from across five disciplines at MD Anderson recently published the largest prospective study on breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), shedding light on the best treatment for patients with this uncommon cancer. “This study underscores the critical importance of a standard treatment approach with a multi-team evaluation,” says Mark Clemens, M.D., the senior author of the study, which published in the Annals of Surgery. Advanced disease BIA-ALCL may require adjuvant treatments such as chemotherapeutic agents, radiation therapy, and stem cell transplant depending on pathology, stage of disease, and disease recurrence. 6, 7 This article will summarize the 2019 update of the NCCN Consensus guidelines on BIA-ALCL and highlight recommendations pertinent to a plastic surgery audience. Initial studies suggest that BIA-ALCL follows a relatively indolent course in most patients and those with early stage disease have an excellent prognosis.
